What keyword tracking actually is
Keyword tracking is a monthly check of where your business shows up on Google for the search terms your customers type in. Not the vanity terms - the ones that book jobs. "Blocked drain near me", "electrician Brighton", "air conditioning installation Port Lincoln". Those are the keywords that pay.
Every month you get a rank snapshot. Which keywords are climbing. Which are stuck. Which ones a competitor just jumped you on. It turns SEO from a guessing game into a dashboard.
Which keywords matter for trades
Not all keywords are equal. There are three types worth tracking:
- Transactional terms - "emergency plumber", "same day air conditioning repair". High intent, people ready to book now.
- Location terms - "plumber Smithfield", "HVAC services Port Lincoln". Town plus trade. These win you the local search.
- Service terms - "split system installation", "hot water system replacement". People comparing before they commit.
Most trade businesses should track 10 to 20 of these. A tight list you can actually act on beats a spreadsheet of 500 keywords you never look at.
What the monthly report shows
The report is one page, not a binder. Rank movements for every keyword you track, which pages are gaining ground, which need work, and what to focus on next month. No jargon, no fluff - just where you sit and what we're doing about it.
That's the whole point. You don't need to understand SEO to know what the report says. You need to know whether you're climbing.
How this fits into a retainer
Keyword tracking is the compass for everything else. The keywords tell us where to point content, which suburbs to target, and what the Google Business Profile should be optimised for. Without tracking, you're spending money on SEO with no way to tell if it's working.
With it, you see movement every single month.
